A small camp, run slowly

The beginning

This started as a text file of links passed between friends who were all bored at roughly the same hours of the day. Most links aged badly. Three did not, and those three are the ones pitched around the camp today.

We never set out to build a portal. Portals are exhausting: endless grids, sponsored rows, a login wall before you can see anything. We wanted the opposite — open the page, see three cards, be playing before the kettle boils.

Four things you will not find here

• A shop of any kind. There is no currency, no bundle and no checkout on this site.
• Prizes. Nothing is awarded, nothing is redeemable and nothing has value outside the screen.
• Accounts on our servers. Profiles are written to your own browser and stay there.
• Newsletters. There is no mailing list, because we have nothing to sell you.

Getting a spot at the camp

A title has to load quickly on an old phone, respond properly to touch, survive a strict ad blocker and still be worth opening on the tenth visit. Most candidates fall at one of the first two hurdles. The three listed on the front page cleared all four.

What we test on

An ageing Android handset, a mid-range laptop and a desktop browser with privacy settings turned up. A title that only behaves on fast hardware with everything permitted is not right for a site meant to be opened on a break.

Who the camp is for

Adults aged 18 and over who want a quiet distraction without any commitment attached. The age line is deliberate: the titles use arcade themes we treat as adult entertainment, and stating that plainly seems better than glossing over it because everything is free.

Changing the line-up

When a title stops earning its tent it gets replaced. No announcement, no changelog — one day there is a different card. Your player profile is untouched, since it belongs to your browser and not to any particular title.
